An Important Day

I should have put this up yesterday, so please forgive me! Those of you who use Google may have noticed that they had a doodle up yesterday honoring the birthday of Cesar Chavez, the Californian labor activist. This was just in the US, of course. Here in Mexico there was no doodle. But since yesterday was Easter Sunday, some people found this a little controversial.

We here at the Music Salon see this as being all wrong. Sure, there is someone whose birthday we should honor on March 31st, but that person is. Wait for it! Johann Sebastian Bach, of course, who was born in Eisenach on that date in 1685.

And we even have the perfect music to put up for the occasion, though, again, I should have put this up yesterday:

In the musical Pantheon, there is no higher place than that occupied by J. S. Bach.

I wish I could divine if your reference to March 31 as JSB's birthday is an error or an April Fool's Day prank. Either one is out of character for this blog.

JSB's birth date, of course, is March 21.

You didn't get the memo about the Gregorian calendar replacing the Julian calendar? J. S. Bach was born on March 21st Old Style, but March 31st New Style. According to Wikipedia, "For a period of 170 years (1582–1752), both dating systems were in concurrent use in different parts of Western Europe and its colonies. The Julian calendar had drifted by 11 days from the solar calendar (due to its excess of leap years), so dates differ between the systems."
