Civilization

Though one wonders these days, there still are those who are civilized:

Wonderful indeed. Brought a tear to my eye last night (I think Althouse noticed this, too, great minds etc). Although I would expect that any serious actress of Miss Dench's generation ought to be able to recite set pieces from memory. Today's Lizzy Caplans and Aubrey Plazas, I don't know.

I used to have all of John Donne's Go and Catch a Falling Star by heart, but no longer. Perhaps this will inspire me.

While I spend a lot of time fussing about with 'classical letters' etc etc, the fact is, apart from the parts of the Mass and then lines of this and lines of that (and my memory of these latter can come and go), the only two lyrics that I know absolutely, as it were, are from Tolkien ('Three rings for the Elven-kings under the sky...') and (sigh) 'All Along the Watchtower' by some modern poet.

Noticed that Jordan Peterson and Jonathan Pageau are celebrating 'citizenship' (at First Things today), which has to be at the foundation in one way or another of 'civilisation': but am not at all familiar with this 'ARC' they have been up to in London.

I haven't heard of the ARC conference before either. But it has an impressive list of speakers. It would certainly seem time for a new model of citizenship--there seem to be several competing ones at the moment.

Realised why I know the name Jonathan Pageau-- he paints icons (the term of art is 'write', one writes icons...) and then writes about 'symbolism', which I reckon is somewhat proximate to (what I understand of) Peterson's project.
