One of the great tragedies of the guitar since WWII was the curtailed performing career of Leo Brouwer due to an injury to a right hand finger. Mind you, it probably resulted in a lot more compositions.

ReplyDeleteHe did this fantastic recording of a bunch of Scarlatti sonatas for, I think, Erato. Amazing interpretations and ornaments! I played it for Manuel Barrueco and he just thought it was "sloppy." But honestly, I would much rather listen to it than Barrueco's Scarlatti which is more precise and much less expressive.
ReplyDeleteYes I know the Scarlatti recordings, and like them a lot. I know others who don't, especially early music players. But then I enjoy Bream's lute recordings. Full of gin and fizz, as Bream would say.
