Clara Schumann and Sofia Gubaidulina at Wigmore

    I'm sorry, Clara Schumann bores me. Dull, dull, dull. It sounds like a string of generic pianistic gestures pasted together in no particular order. Uninspired. I think she was well-advised not to publish.

    the Night Scapes and the Chaconne are both sort of moody and poundy piano pieces, but I was surprised at how much more I enjoyed the latter. Gubaidulina's music is so strong. It seems to be aware of its own existence, to progress in a way that seems dictated by the music itself. Maybe it's that there are no extraneous utterances, everything the music lays out is developed with great care. And perhaps the more regular structure of the chaconne helps to knit it all together. She has a great ear for pacing too, dissonances are carefully voiced, beautiful.

  2. Yes, I'm afraid you are right. About Clara Schumann and Gubaidulina. And this was a fairly early work. She got better.
