I think Ravel has a deeper grasp of orchestration than debussy. Even though prelude to the afternoon of a faun is great, Daphnis et Chloe is colourful, fantasy like and just amazing. Debussy, though, invented a sort of chord progression which Ravel then started to use so I think debussy had a better impact but Ravel composed better works. Is that fair? This is a variant of the concept that artists tend to create their own forebears as Jorge Luis Borges suggested.Bryan Townsendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09482696991279345516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8827040061563065922.post-63001848536428154662018-02-08T22:56:20.887-06:002018-02-08T22:56:20.887-06:00Very Interesting post, howeverI would argue it was...Very Interesting post, howeverI would argue it was Liszt who first wrote "Impressionist" era pieces, with his Les jeux d'eaux a la villa d'este in his years of pilgrimage.Andrew S.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8827040061563065922.post-12628981973255474732014-10-14T10:54:13.156-05:002014-10-14T10:54:13.156-05:00Hmm, not sure I even want to get into this debate!...Hmm, not sure I even want to get into this debate! Like Debussy himself, I am reluctant to call what he was doing "impressionism", but frankly, being inspired by the sounds of nature (though not dogs) occurs in both Berlioz and Debussy. By that logic you can call the dogs barking in Vivaldi's Four Seasons "impressionism"?
No.

Also, as far as the metaphor, I think it really does a good idea to shape up the foggy nebulous aesthetic of Debussy's music, compared to Ravel's sleek and refined textures.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02181232933035667482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8827040061563065922.post-61534012120919076062013-04-01T07:49:34.058-05:002013-04-01T07:49:34.058-05:00Oh yes, I see what you mean! But I hear some 'impressionism' in Berlioz as well such as in the third movement of the Symphonie fantastique with the depiction of the shepherd's "ranz des vaches", the wind in the trees and distant thunder.

But Chabrier was closely involved with the impressionist painters so that might be an important consideration.Bryan Townsendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09482696991279345516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8827040061563065922.post-54377206220909376652013-03-31T23:27:31.949-05:002013-03-31T23:27:31.949-05:00That's a good point, but I think I would give ...That's a good point, but I think I would give most credit to Chabrier for starting what we call "impressionism" in music, and influencing Debussy/Ravel.Nathan Shirleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14123467208814463388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8827040061563065922.post-50930379601847187482013-03-31T11:00:50.514-05:002013-03-31T11:00:50.514-05:00Sorry I didn't see this earlier!
