One perceives how pictorial Mahler's imagination was. If one could send a postcard from the Apocalypse this would be it. But of course the naivete of it is humorous if you are in a sardonic mood. There is no real terror or awe just photos from the event. But as someone said the heroes a culture picks for itself reveal a lot.Maurynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8827040061563065922.post-52936017299222943182015-07-13T07:52:10.418-05:002015-07-13T07:52:10.418-05:00When it comes to Mahler, I am ambivalent. But there was such a groundswell of support for Mahler 2 that I need to give it a serious listen. Mind you, I haven't gotten to that yet!Bryan Townsendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09482696991279345516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8827040061563065922.post-8708942292235547932015-07-12T21:15:17.114-05:002015-07-12T21:15:17.114-05:00Pft. It was the final concert of the OBF, this afternoon. I'd only 'listened' to it a couple of times before, online, more or less while doing other things. Great beautiful yards of musical fabric, but they seemed to be stitched together, somehow, some Wagner, some Orientalist touchs, I don't know, and the texts! God bless his heart. Will go out online and investigate.Marc in Eugenehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04331547981498637474noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8827040061563065922.post-16690061336094106942015-03-20T08:30:39.166-05:002015-03-20T08:30:39.166-05:00Hi John,

I'm not a huge Schumann fan, but his symphonies seem to fill in a gap between Schubert and Beethoven and the later revival of Brahms et al. I'm sure getting a lot of votes for Mahler 2, so I may rethink that!Bryan Townsendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09482696991279345516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8827040061563065922.post-63912855815974431242015-03-20T08:05:54.052-05:002015-03-20T08:05:54.052-05:00its an excellent list;i'm surprised by the sch...its an excellent list;i'm surprised by the schumann inclusion,i'd probably swap it with mahler 2.A list of 19th century symphonies is easy at the start because Beethoven,Bruckner,Schubert and Dvorak are automatic choices;it becomes really tough when you start considering other candidates for places left.

JohnAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8827040061563065922.post-66908220590366271402015-03-20T07:52:31.594-05:002015-03-20T07:52:31.594-05:00The Jupiter, Mozart's last symphony, had a pro...The Jupiter, Mozart's last symphony, had a prominent place on my list of the best 18th century symphonies.

I think I will do a footnote to this post on the weekend, because I thought of an entire symphonic tradition that I would like to mention. As for Brahms, I would put his fourth over the others; it seems to be an example of a nearly perfect symphony, in terms of its construction. I think its not too different or lightweight as compared to these hefty compositions, and its amazingly fine, if not as romantic as them and being pretty much a classical symphony.Shantanuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09910091531263531496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8827040061563065922.post-1576007597141931962015-03-19T12:23:26.353-05:002015-03-19T12:23:26.353-05:00Thanks, Craig.
